Roxana and Cindy (Year 7) recently won a competition to design a Buddy Bear – a new town monument for Greenwich. The Buddy Bear now stands tall in Woolwich and was a gift from the Mayor of Reinickendorf, Herr Frank Balzer. Reinickendorf is twinned with Greenwich and the gift marked the 50th anniversary of friendship.

The girls’ design includes famous local landmarks such as the Thames Barrier and Severndroof Castle. Local artist Michele Petit-Jean was commissioned by the council to paint the design onto the Bear.

The bear is a symbol of Berlin, and the Buddy Bear has come to be the ambassador and the town often gifts bears to other places as a sign of connection and friendship.

It is a remarkable achievement that the girls’ design is now a part of their town’s history!
