The Eltham Hill School Year 7 netball team recently defied the odds to qualify for the London Youth Games finals representing the Greenwich Borough. The students worked really hard to beat four other teams in the qualifying round, including two teams that they had previously lost to in league matches which showed that they were really progressing. The students were especially excited as it was the first time the school had qualified for this tournament in the history of Eltham Hill.
Nikki Etminani, Juliette Cunningham, Isabel Wallace, Libbie Jones, Liberty Nichols-O’Connell, Eve Codd, Chenuli Hewarathne and Lily Grace Weerasinghe made up the team who attended the London Youth Games on Tuesday 20th March at Redbridge Sports Centre.
Thirty-two excited and determined teams from all across London turned out to compete on the day. The team faced a tough morning of competition and despite the rain played with passion and grit. Up against tough competition, the students managed to secure one draw in the morning round and subsequently entered a friendly competition in the afternoon. Although our students didn’t come away with the trophy, they learnt an awful lot about the wonderful game of netball that they didn’t know before. The team is committed to attending training weekly and developing together.
Team captain Nikki said, ‘we really enjoyed the day, and saw it as an amazing opportunity. We practice a lot so that we can play our best and it was great to have the opportunity to go out there and play against lots of new teams and to learn from each other.’
Congratulations to all eight students involved in this year’s London Youth Games.
