BTEC: Applied Science

BTEC: Applied Science

Why should I choose Applied Science?

Applied Science is for students who dream of working in a science-related industry in the future, as the course gives you the opportunity to study the main disciplines of science, Biology, Chemistry and Physics, in a more practical way, giving you the relevant laboratory experience needed in the work-place.

This course is taught by highly experienced and dedicated staff with proven track records of outstanding results. We make learning our priority and our staff make studying BTEC Applied Science an interesting, stimulating and accessible experience. There are occasions when students need to go off-site to visit other laboratories and scientific establishments to find out more about wider scientific opportunities.

What applied science do you do?

You will be studying eight units in total, including planning, carrying out and evaluating an investigative project.

Principles and Applications of Science will hone your knowledge of laboratory techniques and prepare you to confidently carry out practical procedures such as:

  • Titrations
  • Preparing standard solutions
  • Calibrating equipment
  • Thin Layer Chromatography
  • Preparing and viewing
  • Microscopic slides
  • Colorimetry
  • Analysis of substances

OK, it’s challenging, there are tasks, assignments and assessments to complete through-out the course and good attendance is essential, but students are treated as individuals and we’ll give you lots of support to help you succeed.

The staff are approachable either during or outside lessons. Our students not only succeed here but enjoy themselves while they are achieving their best. We enjoy teaching them and we’ll enjoy teaching you!

Future opportunities

The 3rd Level BTEC Applied Science course is a Diploma (this is equivalent to 2’A’ Level subjects).

Alongside A levels, BTECs are the most widely recognised qualification for admission to higher education (HE) – around one in four of all students starting HE courses in England in 2015 had achieved a BTEC National qualification.

Whether you decide to study further, go on to work or an apprenticeship, or set up your own business – your BTEC National will be your passport to success in the next stage of your life.
