High Achievers at Eltham Hill
Each year a number of students join the school who have achieved highly at primary school in their end of KS2 tests. These are students who receive an average grade of a 5C or above in both English and Maths.
It is our ambition at Eltham Hill School that every child reaches their full potential and receives the level of challenge and enrichment that allows them to continue their studies in further and higher education as well as in the world of work.
We aim to ensure that all students who arrive at the school as High Achievers are continually stretched both inside and outside of the classroom. We run a comprehensive programme of activities and enrichment to ensure that High Achieving students receive the breadth of educational opportunities to reach their full potential.
All children make progress at different rates and have different ways in which they learn best. Teachers at Eltham Hill School take account of this in the way they organise their lessons and teach. Children making outstanding progress or showing particular strengths in one area may be given extra challenges or different tasks to help them succeed. This targeted support is overseen by the Lead Practitioner for High Achievement. We aim to provide sufficient challenge to all High Achievers in their lessons across the Curriculum.
Eltham Hill School Super Curricular Programme 2016 -17
What is the aim of the super-curricular programme?
The super-curricular programme aims to broaden students’ academic and social horizons by exposing them to a range challenging and enjoyable activities, which go over and above the expectations of them within the normal school curriculum. The programme promotes high aspirations and enables students to begin planning for their futures at Post 16, higher education and in the world of work.
How will students be selected?
Students in Years 7, 8 and 9 will be offered places on the super-curricular programme during the academic year by Ms Roberts (Lead Practitioner for High Achievement) or based on teacher recommendations as well as students or parents own requests. Please feel free to contact her if your child would like to be offered a place.
What activities will be offered?
UKMT Mathematics Challenge – (Ongoing – Ms Locke)
Students will work towards competing in a national competition involving logical thinking and mathematical skills with the potential to go onto further rounds and even compete against students in other countries.
Philosophy for Children – (HT2 – Ms Roberts)
These sessions encourage students to question assumptions, develop opinions, analyse significant concepts and generally apply the best reasoning and judgement they can to explore the question they have chosen. Students will develop skills in co-operation, as well as improving their critical and creative thinking.
Debate Club – (HT2 – Ms Ibrahim)
Students will explore the principles underpinning successful debating skills and be exposed to a range of challenging topical and ethical issues through a series of sessions leading towards a final debate performance.
‘Film Skool’ – (HT2/3 – Ms Parke)
Students would have the opportunity to write, direct and edit a number of short films. The films will be screened at a West End cinema at the ‘Film Skool’ Premiere where they can invite family and friends.
Spelling Bee – (HT3 – Mr Luke)
Students will take part in an inter-school competition which challenges them to spell complex vocabulary accurately. This will enable them to develop their comprehension skills as well as broaden their vocabulary.
BBC School Report – (HT3 – Ms King-Thorpe)
These sessions will enable students develop their journalistic skills as they become School Reporters. In March, they will take part in an annual News Day, simultaneously creating video, audio and text-based news reports, and publishing them on a school website, to which the BBC will link.
Maths in Real Life – (HT4 – Mr Said)
Students will attempt to solve a wide range of challenging and exciting mathematical problems and discuss the history and development of complex mathematical ideas as well as using creative approaches in order to solve open-ended investigations.
Music and the Mind – (HT5 – Ms Sewell)
Students will explore the effect that music can have on the brains cognitive function and development during a series of workshops in which they will explore have the opportunity to conduct their own psychological studies.
Introduction to Oratory – (HT5 – Ms Stawna)
Students will explore the art of speech writing using resources from Harvard University which cover a range of challenging topics. They will improve their writing skills as well as developing their confidence and skills in delivering a speech.
Music and Politics – (HT6 – Ms Mott)
Students will explore a range of classical music associated with a range of 20th century historical figures and events. They will develop their skills in musical analysis as well as being exposed to a range of historical contextual detail and theories.
Food for Thought – (HT6 – Mr Reeves)
Through a combination of practical experiments and classroom learning, students will learn how to adapt food science experimentations and theory. This will include developing and testing a hypothesis, identifying and controlling variables, observing and recording results, recording, concluding and evaluating procedures. As part of the course, students will investigate the following: gelatinisation of starch, presence of carbohydrates, denaturing of proteins, enzymic browning, producing cheese, energy content of foods.
