Start of Term Arrangements Update January 2021

Dear parents/carers,

I have delayed writing to you regarding arrangements for the start of term as we often find that the instructions from government change at the last minute. If you listened to Gavin Williamson earlier today you will know that things have indeed changed.

Key worker and vulnerable students

School will only be open from 5th January to the children of key workers and those classified as vulnerable. They will be supervised to complete work online from 9am to 2.50pm. To make sure that staff and students are safe in school from the start of term we are asking that all students who return to school take the opportunity to get a lateral flow test. Greenwich Local Authority has made provision for this to happen at Charlton Athletic Football Club from this coming weekend. Please follow this guidance to book your child a test before they return. Staff are also having the opportunity to be tested before returning to school.

Year 11 and 13

These year groups will not now be able to start back in school on 5th January. Instead they will have online learning  We want that online learning to be high quality so students in Years 11 and 13 will have their usual timetable but just via zoom lessons each day. If your child is in Year 11 or 13 and cannot access zoom lessons at home for any reason we would like them to come into school so please get them tested this weekend at Charlton Athletic and then, assuming they are clear of Covid and symptom free, send them into school on Tuesday for a 9am start.

Year 13 BTEC exams on the 6th, 7th and 8th of January will go ahead as planned so students should come in to school to sit these exams. Students should aim to go for a lateral flow test before coming into school

Year 11 PPE exams planned for next week will be rearranged for when they are back in school so Year 11 students should continue to prepare for them.

Years 7,8,9,10 and 12

Students in these year groups are expected to be able to return to school on January 18th. They will have online learning on ClassCharts next week and then an increasing number of zoom lessons in the week beginning 11th January as we get more staff safely back into school. If your child does not have access to the internet or a laptop for any reason you should let us know and we can either help resolve the IT issues or invite them to come into school.

Greenwich have well thought through plans for rolling out testing for all students and staff in schools and this staggered start to the term will give us all the chance to get these systems robustly in place. If you have any concerns about your child’s ability to manage in this new challenging period please let us know and we will do everything we can to support. I am very hopeful that this period of partial opening will be shortlived and that the lateral flow testing programme  that is established will allow all our students to access their learning safely this term. Please do look at those initial plans here
