Rights Respecting Schools Award
We are very lucky at Eltham Hill School that we get to work in an environment of Excellence, Happiness and Success – our inclusive community has not happened by accident, it is built on respect, kindness and equality.
We are currently working hard to incorporate the ideals of the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child (UNCRC), which was held to ensure that every child can grow, learn, be safe, be listened to and be treated fairly. The Convention has 54 articles that cover all aspects of a child’s life and set out the civil, political, economic, social and cultural rights that all children everywhere are entitled to. It is an overarching set of values that improve the climate for learning and in which, other initiatives can sit. Our learning climate empowers young people to always try their best, support each other and learn to their fullest potential, in a positive and calm school.
The Rights Respecting Schools Award puts children’s rights at the heart of school life in the UK. As a school community, we are currently working towards achieving the Bronze Award for Rights Respecting Schools.
The UK Committee for UNICEF (UNICEF UK) works with schools in the UK to create safe and inspiring places to learn, where children are respected, their talents are nurtured and they are able to thrive. Our Rights Respecting Schools Award at Eltham Hill School embeds these values in daily school life and gives children the best chance to lead happy, healthy lives and to be responsible, active citizens. Underpinned by a common rights respecting language, our young people learn about their rights by putting them into practice in school every day, whilst knowing that these rights apply in the wider world.
The Award recognises a school’s achievement in putting the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child into practice within the school and beyond.
In order to achieve the award, we have a steering group of students who are led by our Assistant Headteacher, Ms Osborne. The steering group works on developing the rights of our students through active participation in projects and leading the work towards the Bronze award. Through this work we will continue to build a community at Eltham Hill where children’s rights are learned, taught, practiced, respected, protected and promoted.
NEXT STEPS: Achieving Our Bronze Award
For the first stage of the award our steering group of students is going to be working on making sure that our school community are committed to developing the rights of the child and being rights aware as we move towards the Silver Award. This year, we will be looking at displays in terms of promoting rights and also sharing information with staff and students through training and activities. We are also looking forward to building on and developing our fundraising events.
